Same-store sales for the week ended Sept. 28 rose 0.2% from the prior week and by 2.1% from the same week of the prior year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs chain-store index. Cooler weather helped fuel demand for seasonal apparel. That was likely good news for clothing retailers such as Gap ( GPS ), Victoria's Secret's parent L Brands ( LTD ) and off-price retail operators such as Ross Stores ( ROST )and TJX Cos. ( TJX ). View Enlarged Image According to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs channel-checking survey, business strengthened for apparel, department, specialty — including jewelry — and electronics stores, but weakened for grocery, drug, wholesale clubs, office and furniture stores. That's a good sign for department store operators such as Macy's ( M ), electronics retailers such as Best Buy ( BBY ) and jewelry retailers such as Tiffany & Co. ( TIF ) Nationally, it was the coolest fourth week of September since 2006, which helped spur demand for seasonal goods including outerwear and sweaters. And, gas prices declined for the fourth straight week, which continued to strengthen consumers' discretionary purchasing power. ICSC's chief economist Michael Niemira forecasts same-store sales for the full month of September will rise 3% to 4% vs. a year ago when retailers report the final tally on Oct. 10. That would compare with the 3.6% gain for the 12 monthly-reporting chain stores that are tracked by Niemira. With 73 stores reporting second-quarter sales of ICSC's quarterly all-industry tally of about 125 stores, same-store sales are tracking at a year-over-year gain of about 1.4% so far. That's slightly ahead of the 0.8% pace of the first quarter. Excluding Wal-Mart ( WMT ), industry sales are tracking up 2.5% vs. a year earlier.
