Story
Set five years after the events of Borderl and Handsome Jack, the game's main antagonist, has taken over the Hyperion Corporation, declared himself Dictator of Pandora and taken all of the credit for finding the Vault -- going so far as to claim responsibility for killing the Destroyer. Jack has also blotted out much of the light on the planet by having a giant orbiting H-shaped base set in front of Pandora's stationary moon, creating a 'big brother' atmosphere throughout the planet. The new group of Vault Hunters in Borderlands 2 are tasked with killing Jack and returning peace to Pandora.
Borderlands 2 begins with the protagonists on a train to an unspecified location to begin their search for the vault. The train turns out to be a trap set by Handsome Jack, to kill all who search for the Vault. The Vault Hunters defend themselves long enough to reach a train car filled with explosives and a 'dummy' Handsome Jack look-a-like. The detonation causes the train to crash in the Arctic Wasteland, with our new team strewn across the wreckage. The game picks up with the Vault Hunters waking up to Claptrap digging through the remains. The mysterious Guardian Angel then contacts them and explains that Handsome Jack must be killed, directing players to rescue the four original Vault hunters from Hyperion's clutches to accomplish this.
All four of the original Vault Hunters reappear in the sequel as NPCs, taking a pivotal role during the main storyline and offering optional missions that continue their personal story.

Weapon Types
Borderlands 2 features a huge range of Weapons with an insane number of specialized features. Gearbox is placing more emphasis on giving weapons produced by specific corporations more defined characteristics. The intent of the weapons pages are to give you some sense of how weapons work generally in Borderlands 2 -- not to list the nearly infinite combinations of weapons. Make sure to check out the Brands/Manufacturers page for a list of the different special properties each manufacturer provides.

What Are SHiFT Codes and Golden Keys?
SHiFT is Gearbox Software's fan reward program. Players can sign up for Gearbox Software's SHiFT Premiere Club directly from within Borderlands 2 (PC/Mac, PS3, or Xbox 360). Membership is free. Once signed up, you can enter SHiFT codes, which will unlock rewards such as skin customizations or other goodies -- including the coveted Golden Keys. Codes have to be redeemed from inside the game, via the Extras menu.
Golden Keys are special rewards for users who have signed up for SHiFT. Each Golden Key opens the special Golden Key Loot Chest near the Fast-Travel Station in the middle of Sanctuary once.
CAUTION: You cannot get back Golden Keys once they're used, even if you back out of the game without saving. Either accept the loot or lose it AND the key forever.
Once signed up for SHiFT, users are rewarded with a Golden Key, which can be used to unlock the specialGolden Key Loot Chest near the Fast-Travel Station in the middle ofSanctuary (you will not be able to access it until about 4 hours into the game). Users can collect multiple keys. When unlocking the loot box, the key is used up. Players are rewarded with special weapons that scale to the character's current level.
Unlocking Additional Golden Keys and Rewards
Players can unlock additional Golden Keys via codes given away by Gearbox or its employees. Codes can be entered only once per SHiFT account and are independent of your character saves you've got; meaning, one key works across all your saves. Codes given away online are not single-use -- all users can use the same code, but there are time limits on when the code can be entered. After the time period is over, the code becomes unusable.
