Arms and the ManArms and the man is a romantic comedy play by George Bernard Shaw that was produced in 1984. The play was published in 1898. The play mainly talks about the Petkoff household in Bulgaria and symbolizes romantic experiences about war and heroism. It has come to Raina’s Petkoff attention that her Fiance, Sergius Sarandoff, led his army to a victory over the Serbians. A Swiss mercenary who was fighting for the Serbian army took refuge at Raina’s bedchamber. Raina agreed to hide the Swiss refuge from the authorities. Raina at first made fun of the Swiss mercenary for his cowardness but later learned to appreciate his honesty which made her finally decide to offer him a chocolate candy. As soon as Raina left her room, the Swiss man fell a sleep on her bed. Later on after the war was over, Sergius has promised himself to a maidservant Louka who ended up to be his fiancé. Also after the war was over, Captain Bluntschli, who has just inherited some Swiss hotels, returned and got engaged to Raina. The comedy of the play depends on contrasts of characters, unexpected turns of events, mistaken identities, surprising opinions, irony, wit and satire. The rather thin action of the play provides a comic framework for Shaw's satire of romantic ideals concerning war and heroism.

Characters
Captain Bluntschli : He is a Swiss professional solder who has been appointed Captain in the Serbian army. He is roughly 35 years old. he is energetic, practical, well-trained and of handsome face. He feels that it is better to be armed with chocolates than with ammunition in the battlefield. When his line was broking and his forces scatterd by a Bulgarian cavalary charge, he took refuge in Raina’s room. He is worldly, cool-headed, with a sense of humor about his situation and the world. He is a realist who believes in adapting to a situation in order to survive. A professional soldier, he knows that he is only a tool and he has no illusions about war and the practical actions one must take to win battles and stay alive. His most famous feature is that he keeps chocolates in his cartridge belt rather than bullets. His common sense appeals to Sergius, who is in awe of Bluntschli’s ability to figure out troop movements. This influence helps Sergius make the decision to be honest about Louka and to change his life.

Raina Petkoff : she is the young heroine of the play, the only child of major Petkoff. Her family is one of the wealthiest families in Bulgaria. She is young and beautiful and intensly councious of that fact. She has many romantic ideals about love and noblility, courage and beauty, but she is not above using them to get what she wants. She is a high spirited idealistic girl who initially has romantic notions of love and war. But changes her views as a result of events of the play.when she met Bluntschli she saw him as a cowerd mercenary .in the beginning she was an ideal romantic person how beleve in higher love and romantic ideal, but, when she met bluntschli and he told her about sergius fool act in war she started to suspect those ideal.
Cathrin Petkoff: she is a middle age affected woman who is Raina’s mother. She is imperiously energetic, good looking and wishes to impresses everyone with her social standings. She has a powerful and commanding presence that even her husband respects. She is a smart and capable fourty years old woman who is determined to be a Viennese lady. To that end she wears a fashionable t-gown on all occasions.
Majore Petkoff: Raina’s father. He is a cheerful, excitable, insignificant, unpolished man about fifity. Naturally not ambitious except when it comes to his income and his importance in local society. Just now he is greatly blessed with the military rank which the war has thrust on him as it makes him a man of consequences in his town. His rank in the Bulgarian army is more of his family’s wealth than his ability as a military strategist or leader. He is a good natured, gullible and blustery.
Majore Sergius Saranoff: major Saranoff is dashingly handsome, romantic hero filled with bravado and idealistic morals. He, too, has gained his high military rank in the Bulgarian army through his charm and family position rather than through common sense of training. He is engaged with Raina but flirts with Louka. He believes in higher love and idealistcs. He is observant, but what he observes constantly disappoints his romantic ideals for the world. Not even he can live up to his ideals. This has created and ironic and slightly cuynical air of general brooding that suits him well.
Louka: she is a maidservant in the Petkoff household. She is beautiful but proud. She is so defiant that her servility to Raina is almost insolent. She is afraid of Catherine, but even with her goes as far as she dares. Very ambitious, she has the greatest contempt for those who serve willingly. She wishes to rise in life and Nicola wishes to marry her but she has other plans.
Nicola: head servant in the Petkoff household. He is an old servant of the family who is descret and servile. He is fond of Louka, but disapproves of her bold attitude. He is a middle aged man of cool temperament and low but clear and keen intelligence. He is complacent about his station as a servant and values himself on his rank servility. He has the imperturbability of the accurate calculator who has no illusions. A very interlligent and capable man, he plans to open his own shop eventually.
The plot
The plot: a fleeing member of the Serbian army desperately climbs through Raina Petkoff’s bedroom window to escape capture, but he turns out to be a Swiss mercenary officer by the name of Captain Bluntschli. Raina scholds him for being cowardly and informs him of the bravery of her fiancé, Sergius, a Cavalary officer who led the Bulgarian victory. Bluntschli informs her of the foolish nature of Sergius charge in the battle and then explains that chocolates are more valuable in a war than bullets, a statement that outrages Raina. He shocks her even more when she reveals that he is afraid and unwilling to die. However, when soldiers come seeking out the run-away, Raina hides the fugitive, and only her maid, Louka, is aware of her actions. ACTII takes place four months later, when Rainas fater and fiancé have returned after the war. The two men talk about a young Swiss officer who had impressed them with his practical approach to the exchange of soldiers. The men also laugh about the tale of the officer’s escape and how a young girl had given him shelter in her bedroom, little suspecting that it happened in major Petkoff’s own house. Meanwhile in secret, Sergius has been flirting with Louka. Unexpectedl, Captain Bluntschli shows up to return an overcoat that Raina had lent him for his escape, and she panics when her fater invites him to stay for lunch. In ActIII, while Bluntschli is helping the men plan for the transport of troops, Raina is worried that her fater will find the photo she had secretly left in the coat of her “chocolate Cream Soldier”. When Sergius discovers bond between Raina and Bluntschli he chanlenges him to a duel, but Raina interrupts and expresses her reall feelings for Bluntschli. Louka succeeds in securing Sergius for herself and major Petkoff and his wife give consent to Bluntschli to marry Raina.

The theam
Romantic*practical:
In this play shaw raises a Q between wich is beter beang a romantic or a practical person.shaw personificate romantic in raina and sergius and practical in bluntschli.Raina is a romantic heroen like her fiancée sergius .she blaive in higher love and romantic ideal.she like her fiancée and she want to be worthey of him.she is nobil and generos .she saw bluntschli as acowerd mercenary and un chivalris .
When she faced bluntschli she was nobill and gaive him a shelter.she felt superior.her behaving is ideal in the beginning .But,we started to suspect this ideal when we know how did sergius won the war and how he talk about higher love and he did not applay it in his real life.He is not beang able to respect higher love .He is a very negative person and controduct him self by flearting with louck. On the other hand shaw shows bluntschli as a practical man who is more admirable becous he is practical.bluntschli is a clear and profishonal man. He now how to negotiate and how to move solders beter then any one else.he is the only one who can see the real raina. He won her heart by beang practical.
This is shaw gaiving his message by saying that it is beter to be practical than romance.
Another matter is that Bluntschli borrows the coat of Raina’s father in which a Bluntchli’s photo is pocketed. This photo indicates the fugitive has been hidden in Raina’s house and there must be a love-story in a way or another. It is accepted that Raina’s father could have inquired his daughter of how the photo has been put into his coat pocket and to whom it belongs.
JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ “ brevity is the soul of wit”. Sergius says to Louka: “ … I would set you on the throne by my side”. He means that if he were a king, Louka would be the queen beside him. Sergius says to Bluntschli : “ … you are a machine “. We the machine is made of iron and it is absolutely empty of feelings and emotions; thus, Sergius likens Bluntschli as a machine that neither moves and feels at all.
Louka says to Sergius: “ … that touch makes me your affianced wife “, Sergius replies:” ah! I forgot that “. We as reader have a background of what has occurred before this position. The article (that) in this sentnence refers to Sergius’s promise to Louka if he touched her hand she would be his wife. Increasingly, we figure out Bernard Shaw’s talent in narrating his ideas.
Sergius cheerfully says to Louka: “You belong to me” after she has touched his hand. It means that Louka is right now his wife.

the coat:is one of the important theams in the play.becuse it helped bluntschli to escape wich added realistic toutch to the play. The coat broughts bluntschli back and add a comic situation to the play.Another aomic is when major petkoff wanted his old coat and says tht he could not faind it and cathren bet that it is in the hous and because sergius is dump he bet too.The coat started a romance because raina put her bicture in the coat pocket for bluntschli wich mean she likes him.
Fainally, the coat made raina act like she is a loving daughter when she offerd to fix her father coat to take the picture from the pocket wich caused a FRACE.

New women:shaw presented a new kaind of women in his play.A powerfull, smart, strong and capable women.
Like cathren, she is a power full and commanding women that even her husband respects.

Louka: she is a smart and ambitious. She wishes to rise in her life and that’s what happened when she became sergius wife.

The last example in shaw new women is Raina:she has many romantic ideals about love, nobility and beauty.
But, she is not above using them to get what she want.
