Caneda hails Ittihad comeback
Jeddah: Al Ittihad coach Raul Caneda hailed his side’s spirited second half display in their impressive come-from-behind 4-2 win in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarterfinal over Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande on Wednesday evening The two-time former champions trailed Marcello Lippi’s side twice only to come back to win thanks to a pair of second half headers from Naif Hazazi as the Jeddah-based club showcased the fighting qualities that have seen them qualify for four previous semi-finals.
A fifth now looks a distinct possibility thanks to an impressive second half showing in front of their home fans, although Spanish coach Caneda knows the job is far from over.
“I think we had problems in the first half,” said Caneda. “We didn’t believe in taking the ball.
“When we don’t take the ball, Guangzhou have the ball and they have top players like Dario Conca and Muriqui, but when we have the ball we have the soul to do the job.
“There is still the away game but we had the confidence to come back and only a special team can do that.”
Al Ittihad’s performance in the second half showed a marked improvement from the first period when the Saudis started with three men in defence, only to switch tactically in the final 45 minutes with devastating effect.
Gao Lin gave Guanghzou the lead before Diego De Souza pulled his side level less than a minute later but the Chinese club went into the half time break leading thanks to a goal from Huang Bowen.
However, a penalty from Mohammed Noor restored parity before Hazizi’s headers put Al Ittihad on the verge of reaching the last four.
“I think in the second half we showed our heart and soul by taking the ball constantly,” said Caneda.
“In the second half they suffered and when we scored the second goal we were playing well. But we tried to take control of the ball.They are a top team with top players from around the world but when they didn’t have the ball they suffered.
