T215A: Communication and information technologies (I)
________
Question 1 (Solved in a Group):
This question carries 25% of the marks for this assignment.
The security of a wireless LAN is very important, especially for applications hosting valuable information.
For example, networks transmitting credit card numbers for verification or storing sensitive information are definitely candidates for emphasizing security. In these cases and others, proactively safeguard your network against security attacks.
Using the internet and other resources (e.g., books and AOU e-library), write a short report explaining the following factors:
• Discuss the WEP standard (Wired alent Privacy) and explain its operation (6 marks)
• What are the limitations on using the WEP? Also discuss the solutions for these problems (6 marks)
• Discuss the state of the art technology in wireless LAN security (4 marks)
Short Report Writing:

Question 2 (Solved in a Group):
This question carries 35% of the marks for this assignment.
3G Cellular communication Systems have been proposed to replace existing 2G and 2.5G systems. Using the internet and other resources (e.g., books and AOU e-library), write a report explaining the following factors:
• Compare 2G cellular system services with 3G services and explain the features that differentiate a 3G system from a purely 2G system (6 marks)
• Explain in your report the EDGE cellular system and mention the kind of Multiple Access technique used in EDGE. Discuss whether EDGE is classified as a 2.5G or 3G system. (6 marks)
• Compare in your report the main features of CDMA2000 and WCDMA. Consider factors such as Multiple Access techniques, Data Rates, Bandwidths etc. in your comparison. (6 marks)
• Compare in your report the main features of the third generation wireless/UMTS and fourth generation (LTE) wireless technology. (6 marks)

Question 3 (To be Solved Individually):
This question carries 15% of the marks for this assignment.
1) Discuss and elaborate your own and individual contribution in solving “Ques on 1” of this TMA.
(7 Marks)
2) Discuss and elaborate your own and individual contribution in solving “Ques on 2” of this TMA. (8 Marks)
Criteria for marking
The criteria to be considered in marking:
1. Is the contribution significant?
2. Is the task distribution among group members well defined?
3. Is the English correct?
Question 4 (To be Solved Individually):
This question carries 25% of the marks for this assignment. Answer all of the following parts:
a. In the figure shown below, how much stronger is the signal from transmitter A at the car than the signal from transmitter B if dA is six times as large as dB knowing that the distances between the car and the transmiLers are over 100 m? Assume that the transmiLed power from both antennas is the same (5 marks) 4
b. Digital cameras are usually designed to use the JPEG algorithm to compress raw images into smaller files. How small would a 25 MB raw file become if it is compressed with a compression ratio of 4? (5 marks)
c. How many bits are stored in the 1024 KB file? Using an internet connection that usually downloads at 4 Mbit/s, how long would it take to download this file? (10 marks)

d. Taking the speed of the radio signal as 3×108
meters per second, calculate the time taken for a
signal to reach a GPS receiver from a GPS satellite at a position 25 000 km distant from the receiver. Assume that the speed of the signal is unchanged over the whole path length. Express your answer in milliseconds. (5 marks)
